5G: What is It and What Does It Mean for Home Automation

5G

5G enabled devices are still a few years off, but will be significantly faster than current 4G devices.

You may have heard a lot of talk about 5G in the news recently, with the Federal Communications Commision voting unanimously to expand the high-frequency spectrum for high-speed mobile use. The goal is to help more Americans gain access to high-speed internet and as a response to the increasing demand for high-quality mobile video. What exactly does this mean, though? And what does it mean for home automation? Keep reading to learn a little more about 5G!

A Quick Rundown of 5G

The predecessor to 5G, 4G was first used in the United States by Sprint in 2008. At first, only USB modems had access. It would be another two years before 4G enabled smartphones were available. The question of what exactly 5G is is still to be determined. The only thing it is for sure is much faster than 4G. The exact technology that will deliver it and work with it is still yet to be developed.

The Future of Home Automation

The speed of a 5G network is expected to deliver more than 10 times the speed of a 4G network. Some applications of 5G could include finally realizing a connected city. Installing sensors in streetlights and roadways could help improve traffic. The biggest change will be the need to build a new wireless network. Instead of cell towers, access points will need to built and installed virtually everywhere.

Still Years Away

While this sounds like an exciting development (and don’t get us wrong, it is) the reality is that it will be at least five years before 5G enabled devices are available on the market. Most manufacturers have not begun developing products that work on the 5G system, with Verizon Communications and AT&T Inc not planning to begin trials until next year. The technology will need to be standardized by the International Telecommunication Union before it can go live. The Union doesn’t plan to have a standard for 5G until 2020.
