What to Consider When Purchasing a Router

Router

Buying a router may seem somewhat intimidating, but there are a few key points to consider.

Having a good WiFi connection can be a large part of having a solid home automation setup. Your devices all require connectivity to be able to function flawlessly, so it’s critical that you do whatever you can to ensure your internet connectivity is working well for you. Part of this approach means having a router that performs well. Purchasing a router may seem complicated and out of your realm of expertise, but it’s easier than many homeowners may realize!

To Rent or Not to Rent

That sure is the question! Your internet service provider (ISP) may try to provide you with a rented router that costs around $5 to $10 a month. Typically, they’ll send you a router and modem combination. Think of the modem as the initial contact point for internet–this brings a coax cable (like the kind you get cable TV through) into your home and turns it into usable internet. A router then distributes that signal throughout your home.

You’ll typically find that the provided unit is serviceable, though if you plan on using it for long enough, it’s a good idea to just buy your own. Make sure you either buy a combination modem/router unit or purchase a separate router and modem.

Considering Price

Routers can range anywhere in price between $15 upwards of $400. That’s a huge difference so you may be wondering where you fall on the spectrum as a user. It’s difficult to recommend the more expensive routers as technology is changing so often that they become outdated somewhat fast. Most mid-tier routers, priced between $50 and $100, will serve the average user well.

Different Ranges

You have to consider how your home is designed and and what your range needs may be. Most routers will specify in their description how many feet they extend to. You’ll want to place your router central to where all of your devices are so each can connect. If you’re finding you have some areas that aren’t getting as good of a signal, WiFi extenders may be the option for you.
